You may think that brushing your teeth is a no-brainer. You put a little toothpaste on the bristles, run it over your teeth, and presto! Another job well done! Well, not exactly. While brushing your teeth is not the most complicated part of your day, it does take a little bit of effort.

As our dentist, Dr. Rani Ramnath will tell you, you need the right toothbrush. Basically, you need a toothbrush with soft bristles. Other than that, look for one with a firm grip, and a head that is small enough to reach every part of your mouth. Keep an eye on your toothbrush. When the bristles start to wear out, or if you have had it for more than three months, it is time for a new one.

Before you start brushing, rinse your mouth to remove any loose food debris. The key to effective brushing is time. You need to spend at least two minutes to do a good job, Ideally, spend one minute on each row of teeth. Brush the outsides and then the insides of your upper teeth, followed by your lower teeth. Don’t forget to brush along your gum line, and it is also a good idea to clean your tongue. When you are finished, rinse your mouth again to remove anything that you might have loosed while you brushed. Remember, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day. It is a good idea to brush after every meal, but remember to wait thirty minutes after you eat so your saliva will have time to neutralize the acids from your food.
